At We Build Decks, we discuss the layout, framing, stairs, railings and connection to the house alongside the decking material. Those details can have as much impact on the finished project as the boards themselves.
The short comparison
| Question | Composite decking | Pressure-treated wood |
|---|---|---|
| What does it look like? | Consistent manufactured colours and profiles, depending on the product line. | Natural wood grain, variation and visible changes as boards weather. |
| What's the upkeep? | Cleaning and periodic inspection; usually no recurring stain or paint schedule for the boards. | Cleaning, inspection and a finishing or maintenance plan as appropriate. |
| How does it affect cost? | Often a higher initial decking-material cost; exact product and details matter. | Often a more accessible initial decking-material cost, with ongoing care to plan for. |
| What should I check? | Colour and heat, slip feel, fasteners, manufacturer-approved support and trim. | Drying and movement, fasteners, treatment and finishing recommendations. |
This compares the deck surfaces, not complete installed project pricing. Height, footings, stairs, guardrails, access and removal work may change the full quote substantially.
Why some Calgary homeowners choose composite
Composite is appealing when you want a consistent finished surface and don't want routine staining to be part of your deck-maintenance plan. The trade-off is often a higher initial material cost. Darker boards may feel warmer in direct sunlight, and different product lines vary in texture, colour, profile and installation requirements.
Ask your builder to identify the exact manufacturer, board line, colour, border treatment and fastening approach. “Composite decking” on its own doesn't tell you enough to compare two quotes fairly.
Where pressure-treated decking can be the better fit
Pressure-treated wood can help homeowners put more of their initial project budget toward the size and layout of the deck. It has a natural wood appearance, but the boards can dry, check, move and change colour over time. Maintenance is part of the ownership plan.
Choosing pressure-treated decking doesn't mean compromising on structural design. Footings, beams, joists, blocking, stairs, railings, flashing and hardware all need to be planned for the specific job, whichever surface you choose.
Three Calgary-specific details worth planning early
1. Sun, snow and moisture
Calgary decks see strong sunshine, cold winters and changing moisture conditions. Check board colour and heat in the actual exposure of your yard. Make sure the design has a sensible drainage and ventilation approach, and that the material is installed according to its manufacturer instructions.
2. The house connection and existing structure
For a new deck or a rebuild, the existing wall, door height, ledger area, footings and framing need attention before anyone assumes the old frame can be reused. A new surface doesn't repair hidden structural damage. We review visible site conditions and identify what needs further investigation.
3. Stairs, railings and visible edges
Picture-frame borders, fascia, stair treads and railing posts change how the finished deck looks. They also affect material quantities, blocking and installation details. Discuss these when selecting the deck boards, rather than treating them as last-minute add-ons.
Can composite decking keep the space underneath dry?
Standard composite deck boards aren't a waterproof membrane. If you need a dry area under an elevated deck, tell us before the design is finalized. A purpose-designed waterproof deck system may be more appropriate than ordinary gapped deck boards.
You can also compare composite, wood and vinyl decking options in our deck material guide.
How to compare the full cost of two quotes
Don't compare the board price in isolation. Ask what is included for foundations, framing, dismantling the old deck, disposal, stairs, railings, skirting, border details, permit coordination where required and the finish around the house.
A written scope should identify materials and work clearly, and any payment milestones or coverage should come from the actual project documents—not a generic website promise. Our deck cost and planning checklist can help you compare what two contractors are offering.
So which surface should you choose?
Start with three questions: Do you want to avoid regular staining? How much does the natural wood appearance matter to you? And how should the entire project fit your budget once stairs, railing and the structure are included?
There's no single answer for every home. We can look at your yard, discuss material options and prepare a written quote based on the actual project rather than an assumed price per square foot.
