Calgary deck planning

Composite or cedar for your Calgary deck?

Start with the look you like and the care you are willing to do. Composite offers a consistent manufactured finish. Cedar brings natural grain and variation. Both need a properly planned structure underneath.

Think about your actual Calgary yard

A sunny south-facing deck and a shaded yard can feel different underfoot and dry differently after rain or snow. Look at samples in your own exposure. Ask about surface temperature, drainage, ventilation and the care instructions before choosing a colour or board.

Neither material replaces the need to plan footings, framing, the connection to the house, stairs and railing. For a rebuild, we assess the existing structure before recommending what can stay.

Choose the upkeep you will actually do

Composite can suit you if you want to avoid a recurring wood-finishing job. It still needs cleaning and checks. Cedar can suit you if natural wood matters most and you are comfortable with its changing appearance or maintaining a finish.

Compare the full written scope, including demolition, stairs, railing and finishing. There is no useful universal price comparison without the actual products and layout.

Common questions

Is composite decking maintenance-free?

No. Composite needs cleaning and periodic inspection. Follow the care guide for the exact board line, including approved cleaners and snow-removal methods.

Does cedar have to be stained?

That depends on the appearance you want. Cedar can weather naturally, or you can use an appropriate finish to help retain a chosen look. A finished deck needs a maintenance plan; cleaning and inspection still matter either way.

Can we reuse the old deck frame?

We need to assess its condition, connections and compatibility with the chosen decking. New boards do not repair hidden damage or make an unsuitable frame suitable.
